Who believes Spice Girls shop at Tesco?

14 Nov

Er, not me. Surely this is an insult to our intelligence. Spice Girls are nice enough, but surely a powerful idea and good insight is better. The celebrity and brand values are not remotely connected. It’s great to see how embarrassed they are to be shopping in Tesco – they should also be embarrassed to be in this advert. I’m not saying it will damage the brand, it probably won’t, it just seems like a bit of a cop out to me…

It isn’t even Christmas yet anyway – check it here.

Totally agree Nicola, the endorsers and the endorsed are positioned on opposite ends of the scale. But some might argue that a large chunk of those upon whom girl power was bequeathed shop at Tesco, so the partnership may have some shaky foundations.

I also suspect the Spice Girls may have been the more enthusiastic party in this unholy celebrity endorsement union.

The execution is pretty good, but the idea just has no real basis whatsoever. It’s cashing in on celebrity rather than using them properly.
